Young Men with Big Beards

by Yvette Monahan and Sean Breithaupt of studioseventyseven

Young Men with Big Beards emerged from observing the growing trend for facial hair amongst men between the ages 20 to 35 around Dublin. The portrait project started to capture this zeitgeist and to study the beard wearers through large format photography.

Beard art? Yes, please. Keep Portland Beard this April at Tribute Gallery

It’s only fitting that the beardiest city in the United States pays tribute to the hirsute among us at an art gallery.

Keep Portland Beard is an exposition of beardy art curated by Michael Buchino (beardrevue.com) at The Tribute Gallery (thetributegallery.com) from April 19–May 1. The big party will be April 24 at 8 p.m. Open to the bearded and non-bearded alike. RSVP at the facebook page.

The show will feature works by artists Rachel Caldwell, Erin Dollar, Chad Eaton, Chris Hornbecker, Jamie Reed, Ashley Goldberg, Bryan Keplesky, Brooke Weeber, Ian Seniff, Kyle Durrie, Lloyd Winter, Santiago Uceda, BT Livermore, Brian Stimson, Patrick Weishampel and Michael Buchino. Disciplines of all sorts will be represented: painting, illustration, photography, letterpress, screen printing and prosthetic beardcraft. Artist bios can be found here: http://pdx.be/kpb-artistbios.

About the Curator

In 2008, Portlander and beard ambassador Michael Buchino began Beard Revue as a comical revue of beards, grading them on a 0-10.0 scale. Beard Revue has since grown into an internet hub for beard and moustache related art, apparel and assorted ephemera.

Folks are really digging the octo-beard look lately.

365 days of beard.

Scot Taylor has set out on a year-long hirsute adventure.

365 days of beard. One self portrait a day for 365 days. The beard is going to be a measure of my progress, a tracker of my growth, an indicator of my commitment for a year. It will also be a tiny rugged connection and reminder of the untamed Fundy Coast, a place that was once home, a place that I now miss. Follow the beard and follow my year of reconnecting with nature through photographs, words, and design.

Over the course of the year I plan to fundraise and drive awareness for the Nature Conservancy of Canada. Keep up to date through the fan page on upcoming events and merchandise.

Let this be an affirmation of faith that beards and nature and Canada and plaid belong together.
